Mysteries and Oddities in Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley, known for its idyllic and pastoral charm, harbors a plethora of eerie secrets that players can uncover, often blurring the line between a mere game glitch and an intentional spooky surprise. Since its debut in 2016, the game has intrigued players with its hidden mysteries scattered throughout Pelican Town. One such enigma is the unsettling “rain cry,” an unresolved mystery that continues to bewilder players. However, a recent discovery by a player revealed that what appeared to be a peculiar glitch was, in fact, caused by a bizarre in-game item.
A Mysterious Color Change
On Reddit, user Evening-Refuse-8562 shared their bafflement over an unexpected transformation: their farm’s shed had turned black. Initially suspecting a glitch, they sought the community’s insight. The Stardew Valley community quickly clarified that this change was not a technical error. Instead, it was caused by the Cursed Mannequin, a unique piece of furniture capable of altering the wallpaper and flooring of structures. Although this change has no gameplay implications, it can be quite unnerving for those unaware of the Mannequin’s powers.
The Abilities of the Cursed Mannequin
A Mischievous Presence in the Farmhouse
The Cursed Mannequin, introduced in the 1.6 Update of Stardew Valley, is a special furniture item with a mischievous spirit. Players can acquire it as a drop from Haunted Skulls. This possessed item enjoys playing pranks on Farmers, particularly during nighttime. Besides transforming the flooring and wallpaper of the building it’s placed in, the Mannequin can also target players directly, leading to startling surprises in the morning.
More Than Just a Decorative Piece
The Cursed Mannequin can swap clothes with the Farmer overnight, provided it has its own outfit. This results in players waking up to find their characters wearing the Mannequin’s clothes, while the attire they went to sleep in is now on the Mannequin. Additionally, the Mannequin has a habit of moving around at night, so Farmers might find it in a different location come morning.
Cursed Mannequin vs. Other Sinister Items
While undoubtedly creepy, the Cursed Mannequin is not the most threatening artifact in Stardew Valley. The Ancient Doll, for instance, poses a more direct threat. It reacts violently to Farmers who use the Dark Shrine of Selfishness to transform their children into Doves. This action prompts the Ancient Doll to send a menacing message and even emerge from the TV to attack the Farmer. Compared to this, a Cursed Mannequin that merely alters interior designs seems like a relatively mild encounter.
